{"id":1407,"date":"2018-05-31T05:51:38","date_gmt":"2018-05-31T05:51:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/brisbane-based-universal-field-robots-has-developed-technology-to-help-pick-avocados\/"},"modified":"2022-05-05T04:40:24","modified_gmt":"2022-05-05T04:40:24","slug":"brisbane-based-universal-field-robots-has-developed-technology-to-help-pick-avocados","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/es\/brisbane-based-universal-field-robots-has-developed-technology-to-help-pick-avocados\/","title":{"rendered":"Brisbane-based Universal Field Robots has developed technology to help pick avocados"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Universal Field Robots<\/a>&nbsp;team had a fantastic time exhibiting at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/icra2018.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA)<\/a>&nbsp;last week from Monday 21 \u2013 Friday 25 May 2018 at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcec.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst there, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Courier Mail<\/a> Business Journalist Stephanie Bennett interviewed UFR Managing Director Jeff Sterling and watched a live autonomous demonstration of both the excavator and &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kuka.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KUKA<\/a>&nbsp;robotic picking arm in action.<\/p>\n<p>Read her article about how Universal Field Robots, founded by engineer Jeff Sterling, is busy developing outdoor robotic machinery with the potential to shake up the long-standing agricultural industry in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/business\/brisbanebased-universal-field-robots-has-developed-technology-to-help-pick-avocados\/news-story\/3af1d70594227c1cd4f2f3d5c51ca81f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Courier-Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did some strategic looking ahead at what might be happening after the mining downturn, and worked out that robotics was going to be an emerging business,\u201d he said. \u201cWe decided to put our focus into developing a robotic product that can be useful on the land, and one of the first areas we researched into was avocado picking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It led to the development of an autonomous robotic avocado picker, which can attach to the&nbsp;company\u2019s three-tonne robotic Caterpillar excavator.<\/p>\n<p>Not only can does the avocado picker have the capability to identify whether fruit is ripe for&nbsp;picking, the equipment operates at a similar speed to manual picking, but with the potential to operate 24\/7 and without the added labour costs or dangers.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t have access to the Courier Mail online?
