{"id":1385,"date":"2020-10-20T03:41:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T03:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/mining-risks-and-challenges-2020-onwards\/"},"modified":"2022-05-05T04:40:05","modified_gmt":"2022-05-05T04:40:05","slug":"mining-risks-and-challenges-2020-onwards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/es\/mining-risks-and-challenges-2020-onwards\/","title":{"rendered":"Mining risks and challenges 2020 onwards"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The mining industry is faced with impactful changes all the time, so what are the risks and challenges faced by the world\u2019s major minors in 2020 and beyond?<\/h5>\n<p>The sector continues to be in a state of fluidity globally, impacted by longer term trends such as digitalisation and short-term issues posed by trade wars and the current disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/home.kpmg\/au\/en\/home\/insights\/2020\/02\/2020-mining-risk-survey-report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Risks and Opportunities for Mining \u2013 Global Outlook 2020<\/a>, released earlier this year by multinational professional services firm KPMG, surveyed mining leaders from sixteen countries from around the world prior to the impact of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n<h5>Top four risks affecting mining<\/h5>\n\n\n<p>For the second year running global miners flagged commodity prices, permitting risk, access to capital and community relations and social license, as the top four risks affecting the mining industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KPMG Global Head of Mining, Trevor Hart, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce again, today\u2019s commodity price uncertainty and related macroeconomic risks are front of mind for mining executives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is leading the industry players to focus on their own house, getting the basics in order and reducing costs or looking at technology to drive growth, productivity and greater efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em><strong>Interestingly, in the new review disruptive technology continued to be absent from the \u201ctop 10 threats\u201d list and continued trending as an opportunity rather than a threat, while global trade war and tailings management were newcomers to the 10 risks list.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmental risks climbed three spots from 10 to number 7, when compared to last year\u2019s survey, and 75% of respondents said the industry needed to better measure and report on success beyond financial results, based on recognition of a broader range of stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some 60% of respondents said they felt the ability of the industry to access traditional source of debt and equity capital has deteriorated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"771\" height=\"632\" src=\"https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Top-risks-to-global-mining-industry-2019-v-2020-crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Top-risks-to-global-mining-industry-2019-v-2020-crop.jpg 771w, https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Top-risks-to-global-mining-industry-2019-v-2020-crop-300x246.jpg 300w, https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Top-risks-to-global-mining-industry-2019-v-2020-crop-768x630.jpg 768w, https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Top-risks-to-global-mining-industry-2019-v-2020-crop-178x146.jpg 178w, https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Top-risks-to-global-mining-industry-2019-v-2020-crop-50x41.jpg 50w, https:\/\/universalfieldrobots.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Top-risks-to-global-mining-industry-2019-v-2020-crop-91x75.jpg 91w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width:767px) 480px, (max-width:771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h5>Top risks 2020 and beyond<\/h5>\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Commodity price risk<\/strong>. Miners are focusing on how they can reduce costs and how technology can drive growth, productivity, and efficiencies at their own mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Permitting risk.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Access to capital, including liquidity. <\/strong>According to the report, while capital flows are largely influenced by commodity prices, investors are also thinking about how they deploy capital and particularly how companies use capital in terms of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) measures. Some 60% of respondents believe the ability to access traditional sources of debt and equity to capital had deteriorated. Respondents in North America were the most affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Community relations and social license to operate.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Political instability.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Economic downturn\/uncertainty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. Environmental risks, including new regulations, regulatory and compliance changes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8. Global trade war. <\/strong>Some 28% of respondents cited trade war as a challenge and, according to KPMG, it is likely due to the ongoing decoupling between the US and China. The report cites \u201cthe potential for increased global economic instability and geopolitical tensions might lead to greater uncertainty about the longer-term direction of commodity prices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9. Ability to access and replace reserves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10. Tailings management. <\/strong>The report cited that the environmental risk of tailings management is like driven by uncertainty around regulatory changes and the future impact of mining practices stemming from recent tailings-related tragedies in the industry. World-wide climate change will impact how companies operate into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n<p><strong>By contrast, the top 10 risks and challenges in 2019 were:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Commodity price risk<\/p>\n<p>2. Permitting risk<\/p>\n<p>3. Community relations and social license to operate<\/p>\n<p>4. Access to capital, including liquidity<\/p>\n<p>5. Economic downturn\/uncertainty<\/p>\n<p>6. Ability to access and replace reserves<\/p>\n<p>7. Political instability<\/p>\n<p>8. Regulatory and compliance changes\/burden<\/p>\n<p>9. Controlling operating costs<\/p>\n<p>10. Environmental risks including new regulations.
